Frequently asked questions
Is hypnosis dangerous?
Hypnosis is a completely natural state of relaxation which has been used for hundreds of years. You will be very safe and fully in control at all times. In fact you will be able to open your eyes at any time or stop the session if you wish (although no-one ever wants to end this lovely relaxing state). The only time hypnosis could prove dangerous is whilst driving or using machinery and you should never listen to a hypnosis recording or CD in those circumstances.
So I won’t cluck like a chicken afterwards?!
A common misconception! Unfortunately stage hypnosis and television shows have given hypnosis a bad press. People think that they may feel out of control or forced to do something silly or out of character. Stage hypnosis is a form of entertainment whilst Hypnotherapy helps with problems and achievements.
Stage hypnotism is often used to create a sense of power and to manipulate people. As a result many people believe that hypnotherapists have magical powers and can control people. Hypnotherapists cannot make you do anything that you don’t want to and will treat you with care and respect at all times.
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Everybody can be hypnotised – except those who really don’t want to be! (The only exceptions would be those under the influence of alcohol or drugs). Sometimes fear and misconceptions can create an unconscious resistance. This is why I offer a free initial consultation so I can answer your questions and alleviate any fears you may have before hypnosis takes place.
What does 'being hypnotised' feel like?
There are several signs of hypnosis and many people have different experiences – for example you may feel very lethargic, heavy or light, some people enjoy a feeling of floating. The complete mental and physical relaxation, a welcome rest from everyday stresses and worries, is a deeply pleasant experience for everyone – most people say that it is the most relaxed they have ever felt in their lives.
Will I go to sleep during the session?
No – you will always be wide awake, just very deeply relaxed. You will be aware of your surroundings and will even hear sounds both inside and outside of the room.
Will I remember everything?
Yes. You will be surprised to find that you will remember all that happens during the session. It is an extremely enjoyable and relaxing experience during which time your senses are actually heightened so someone in hypnosis would, for example, smell smoke from faulty wiring before another person in the same room who was not in this deeply relaxed state.
Can I drive after having my hypnotherapy session?
Yes. You will be fully alert and refreshed after the session.
Can I talk during hypnosis?
Yes and in Hypnoanalysis (analytical therapy) you will be encouraged to.
How many sessions will I need?
Problems, such as smoking, nail biting, slimming, test/exam nerves etc usually require 1 – 3 sessions and the success rate is very high. The more deep-rooted problems such as fears, phobias and compulsions may require analytical rather than suggestion therapy which usually consists of 6 - 10 weekly sessions. I offer a free initial consultation so we can have an opportunity to meet each other and discuss your particular problem. We will also be able to decide whether Suggestion or Analytical therapy is best for your particular needs and will have an indication of how many sessions you will need. Obviously this varies from person to person. This is your special time, your investment in yourself and I will want to get the best possible results for you.
Is there an official body which governs hypnotherapy?
Not at the present time. However, the IAPH is one of the largest and longest running, hypnotherapy organisations in the UK with professional hypnotherapists throughout the UK and abroad. The IAPH ensures that all therapists go through therapy themselves before qualifying so that they can resolve their own anxieties/issues.
