What is Hypnotherapy?


Hypnotherapy is simply a way of using your mind to solve your problems/issues. It is completely safe and is in some ways similar to being in a daydream. The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word ‘Hypnos’ which means to sleep.

There is nothing magical or mystical about hypnosis.  We all use the trance like state of hypnosis every day without realising it, for example whilst exercising, daydreaming, reading or doing housework. Hypnosis is incredibly powerful and produces very successful results in helping to overcome problems and difficulties.  It is a very enjoyable and relaxing experience during which time your senses are actually heightened so someone in hypnosis would, for example, smell smoke from faulty wiring before another person in the same room, who was not in this deeply relaxed state.

Unfortunately stage hypnosis and television shows have given hypnosis a bad press. People think that they may feel out of control or forced to do something silly or out of character. Stage hypnosis is a form of entertainment whereas Hypnotherapy in a clinical setting helps with resolving problems.

The power of our minds is immense and yet how little of it we use. Just imagine that by simply concentrating on a group of muscles and telling them to go limp and loose you can actually cause that group of muscles to relax. Imagine the positive benefits and advantages you can invite into your life by using your mind and attracting what you desire - how you think affects how you behave.

Take the example of Roger Bannister running a 4 minute mile. Nothing too extraordinary about that you might think. Yet prior to his record breaking success in 1954 no-one had managed to achieve this record. However a year after his accomplishment almost 40 people enjoyed the same victory and the following year the number was 300.

Ok so you have no desire to run a mile in 4 minutes – I can relate to that! However perhaps you do have a desire to achieve a healthy body weight or to rid yourself of a phobia or fear that has overtaken your life? Or perhaps you want to free yourself of a lifetime of smoking, become fitter and slimmer or improve your golfing/sports performance. Like the case of the runners above, something which you thought was impossible or is not something that you personally can achieve – is possible and can be achieved quite easily!

Suggestion Therapy (also known as Clinical Hypnosis)

Hypnosis, along with positive suggestions, visualisation and relaxation techniques results in immediate change and is beneficial in treating symptoms such as stopping smoking, weight loss, driving test nerves, fear of flying, depression, fear of public speaking, nail-biting, relaxation and stress reduction etc. Most suggestion therapy sessions last for about 60 minutes (a one off smoking session takes 1½ hours) and normally only one to three sessions are needed. 

Analytical Hypnotherapy or Pure Hypnoanalysis

In Analytical Therapy hypnosis is used to help you to feel calm and relaxed whilst you talk about past events and experiences. Bottled up or negative emotions can be released in a safe and non judgemental environment. Pure Hypnoanalysis is very effective for the relief of deep seated issues and symptoms such as fears and phobias, childhood trauma, compulsions, eating disorders, guilt, obsessions, panic attacks and more.

Together we will find and remove the cause in just a few sessions. Now I understand that this might sound complicated, impossible even, but it is incredibly simple. By removing the cause of the symptom, the symptom can no longer exist. I am merely a tool in this process, providing a safe, compassionate and non judgemental place with a gentle and caring approach at all times.

Pure Hypnoanalysis is a permanent solution to psychological and emotional issues. Usually 6 – 12 sessions are needed, lasting just under an hour each.
